REFINERY OPERATOR TRAINEE

The Frontier El Dorado Refining Company seeks Refinery Operator Trainees

Job Description:
Operates, on rotating shifts, assigned processing, treating and/or stock handling equipment by manual and/or instrument control under supervision of Shift Supervisor and direction of a Head Operator. Performs other work as directed. Follow written orders and oral instructions on process conditions to be maintained, specifications to be met, stock product routing and disposal. This job is expected to direct and participate in operations of the assigned equipment in accordance with orders with a minimum of supervision. Employee expected to recognize abnormal operating and mechanical conditions and take corrective action in accordance with established procedures. The operator is expected to take charge and decide the best course of action to follow in an emergency until otherwise directed by a higher authority. The Shift Supervisor and Process Unit Operator are available to provide consultation and give directions in resolving unusual operating conditions. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Actively supports refinery safety process and maintains on the job safety vigilance.
  • Work a rotating shift including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.
  • Respond to callouts and holdover requirements.
  • Reviews daily orders at shift relief. Checks instruments, run sheet data, equipment etc. and assures that the operation and equipment conform with operating requirements.
  • Operates equipment manually and/or by instrument/computer control, maintaining temperatures, pressures, levels, and/or other process variables to meet planned production and quality.
  • Fires furnaces, operates pumps, sets lines and manifolds, changes blinds and jump-overs, operates compressors, gauges tanks, draws samples, runs control tests, sends samples to the lab, adjusts chemical injection rates, zeroes meters, changes tests alarms.
  • Repairs equipment as required within ability to accomplish repairs safely and requests maintenance support as necessary.
  • Performs other work, such as lubricating equipment, cleanup and housekeeping.
  • Works closely with other operators in making changes in operating conditions of mutual concern within and outside the process unit to which assigned particularly during startup, shutdown, switching feed, changing regulation, and in handling any other unusual emergency conditions.
  • Keeps Shift Supervisor and Process Unit Operator fully informed of mechanical and process conditions and immediately notifies them if planned operating conditions cannot be maintained. 
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an emergency until otherwise directed or relieved of duties.
  • Complies with and enforces established rules and regulations in use of safety equipment.
  • Documents operating records and passes information at shift change. Keeps Process Unit Operator informed.
  • Performs other work as assigned from time to time to support safe, efficient and environmentally responsible operation
  • Must be able to work at high altitudes in confined spaces.
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective equipment including flame retardant clothing, hard hat, goggles, full face mask, a self contained breathing apparatus, etc, as required.

Special Skills/Requirements or Additional Considerations/Information:

  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • AS degree preferred in Process Plant Technology, Power Plant Technology, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Business Administration

Functional Capacity:
Must be able to work in high noise environments, tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions, work safely around rotating equipment, climb towers of 100 ft. or greater, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, grasp, hold objects and stand or sit for extended periods of time, lift and carry fifty pounds.

Communications:
Speaks, writes and emails clearly/concisely, encourages open expression, listens carefully and respectfully.

Attendance:

Relocation: No relocation benefits apply

Wages: Non-exempt hourly rates $18.21/HR start. Progressive wages are in the upper $20.00 range, based on demonstrated progress.
